Yes, this is quite the tricky roller to replace... one of the keys -- a short, stubby screwdriver ... :-) the key is not to replace the actual rollers, just the rubber ...

Ive been studying my service manuals and learning how to fix laser printers properly to give the best possible advice, doing a few web based courses from HP, these older machines are more diffcult to fix than the newer models are, HP doesnt have any courses on these older models.
Coluld I simply take out the entire assembly, and dislodge the E-clips and clean the shaft? or isnt it worth it, I know how to dislodge E-clips really well, machines i done this for is the laserjet iii and 4 series.
