HP4000 paper exit jam
I have an HP4000 laser jet that won't allow paper to come out to the output tray. It jams somewhere between the exit rollers and the path to the tray. If I leave the back door open, the paper exits fine.
I cannot see any obstruction. What might I be missing?

If you pull your fuser out ... there is a black plastic diverter assembly that pivots to divert the paper either up to the output bin or out the back ...
the spring or hinge of this diverter may be broken/out of place

Sounds like the "face down delivery assembly" (RG5-2648-110CN).

If the top cover had been removed, there are two black plastic guides that may have been flipped backwards.

I had a LJ 4000 that some impatient person pulled the paper out of the face down assembly and caused one of the sensor arms to pop out of its socket. The paper was jamming against the shaft of the sensor (even though the sensor was still working). Naturally you'll have to pull the top off to check for this problem.

Thanks for all of your responses. I've ruled out the delivery assembly, and the diverter assembly, because the paper is being directed toward the face down output bin, but gets stuck somewhere before it actually comes out.
DavidM, I don't know all the correct terminology, but is one of these sensors attached to the stacker full sensor? Your explanation as to how it happened sounds like something someone would have done to this printer.

I'm sure there is at least one and there may be a second sensor besides the bin full sensor. Anybody remember?

I don't think it's that "Bin Full" sensor as there is a specific "Bin Full" error message that would appear onscreen, and then the printer stops printing, rather than a "paper jam" error...
You might want to try replacing your output assembly...
You're sure the diverter assembly on your fuser is functioning properly? If you have another 4000 printer, I would try swapping fusers first...

That's correct, it wasn't the bin full sensor. It was another sensor and one end of the shaft had pulled out of the slot that it fit into. So the sensor arm still moved back and forth correctly, but the paper kept jamming up against the shaft that was no longer properly seated.
