Unhappy Fixing/replacing ink pad on Epson CX4600 and/or extracting ink cartridges

My Epson CX4600 all-in-one has all lights flashing when I turn it on (except for ink and error which are solid) and an E which indicates that a part needs to be replaced…from looking around it seems like the most likely culprit is the ink pad…there are some programs which can be used to reset it after cleaning/fixing it but nothing for Mac or Windows 7 which are my two machines.

I'm getting ready to throw it out but is there any way to fix it? Even if it doesn't work out I was going to give the unit to a charity which breaks down computers for their parts anyway.

Also if there's any way to extract the ink cartridges (one of which is completely full) without completely smashing the thing, so I can get credit at the local refiller. tia

    Default Removing INk Carts

You can remove the ink carts this way
    turn machine off
open top cover so you can see print carriage
    turn on printer
when the print carriage starts to move away from right side
unplug printer from wall socket or strip
the print carriage should be unlocked you can move to position to remove inks

Thanks, I just took the printer to a computer recycling place and someone pried them out for me.
