Turn the printer around backwords, if there is a dust cover on the back of the paper tray, remove it so you can see thru the back (might need a flashlight to see). While it is printing, watch thru the back to see if the four half moon rollers are turning. If they are not turning, there is a plastic coupler that connects that shaft to the pickup assembly that occasionally breaks. If those rollers are turning, the next thing to look at are the two blue feed rollers. One is directly in front of the four pickup rollers, the other is in the paper tray. Swap those with the rollers in tray 3. If it still doesn't work you will probably be needing a new tray 2 pickup assembly. Just be careful when you order the pickup assembly because that model has four different ones, it's pretty easy to order the wrong one by accident if you aren't paying attention.

Change the feed roller and the pickup rollers. Pull out the tray and look inside and up you will see 4 pickup rollers(RB1-8865-000CN)
    and 1 feed roller(RF5-2490-000CN).
    Replace them.

The most common cause of this that I have seen is when someone tried to overload the paper tray then slam it closed. The connecting link between the "D" shaped pickup rollers and the transmission connection is a weak point to protect the transmission from damage. It looks like a dog bone. To replace it pull down the pickup roller assembly on the right side then replace the dog bone and snap the pickup roller assy. back in place. The book wants you to totally disasemble the printer to replace this part. Maybe the Technical Writer was getting paid by the word count? Hope this helps.

No. The part of the pickup assembly that fails is isolated from the part of tray 2 that feeds paper from tray 3 up into the main part of the printer. Glad you got your working, good job!
