It is possible that the static discharge from connecting and disconnecting the printer could cause the circuit inside to be damaged. This is pretty rare, but possible. About all I can think of.

I tend to think your problems are related to the configuration on the PC. I would suggest using the printer on another computer. If thats not an option you may want to consider a network print server...
