resetting ink-levels

When my HP 5700 ran out of black ink a couple of weeks ago, I tried buying one of those refill kits and refilling it myself. Unfortunately, the chip in the cartridge says that the cartridge is empty, so my printer won't even try to use it. Is there any way to reset the cartridge so that my printer will start using it again?
