View Full Version : 4050s feed then back out paper from tray 2

I have a recurring problem that I'm hoping one of the experts can help with. I have 3 HP 4050s that will not feed from tray 2. The paper feeds in, then backs out, then feeds up again and sticks. 13.1 error. I've tried 3 different trays, two from working printers to hopefully eliminate the separation roller as the cause. I've also replaced the 4 paper feed horseshoe rollers, and after no luck I replaced the entire paper feed assembly. (That was a bugger! :( )
I read somewhere about removing half of the metal filings from the separation roller clutch, so I tried that on an extra tray, and I'm still getting the same result. I think I may have to turn this over to a "real" laser repair person. Unfortunately, I'm entirely too cheap for that except as a last resort, so I'm hoping someone here can guide me in the right direction. I'd appreciate any ideas as all of mine have been exhausted.

If the paper moves back into the printer it must be the clutch of the separation roller, I would replace them.

On 3 trays??? ... Keeping in mind that two of those trays work perfectly on other printers? I'll give it a shot, though. It can't hurt and a clutch shouldn't be terribly expensive. I think I can disengage the separation roller clutch and make it work, but then there's nothing stopping multiple papers feeding through.
Thanks for your reply.

You might need to replace the paper feed assembly. I know you said you replaced the feed assembly but maybe you replace the pickup assembly? The feed assembly (RG5-2651) is behind the mp tray assembly. This is a classic symptom of worn rollers in the feed assembly. Paper gets picked up but then falls back in the tray.

You are quite correct. I replaced the paper pick up assembly. I'll give the feed assembly a shot. Thanks for your assistance. (And catching my syntax error)
