I have a HP laserjet 4 plus. I just purchased a HP JetDirect J2556 card and plugged it inot the printer. I plugged a cat 5 cable into the jetdirect card and then the other end into my Linksys router but I can't 'find' the printer nor able to print to the printer. How do I configure the printer so my computer running Windows XP Pro can print to it? Do I need a print server? I hope not. I am using DHCP on my Linksys router BTW.
Thanks

Go to the printer's control panel, MIO menu, make BOOTP=NO*
Then in the submenu assign a static IP in your IP range, but outside of the range of IP's the DHCP server will assign. Make the subnet mask the same as on your network (probably 255.255.255.0). In Windows XP add a new printer in the add printer wizard, select local printer, and create a new port and choose standard TCP/IP port. Enter the IP you assigned to the printer. Continue through the wizard and you are all set!
