HP Laserjet 4P "Off Line" Message

I have a Laserjet 4P, which I hooked up to my Dell running Windows XP. The computer found the printer and I printed a test page. Turned off the computer, but had left the printer on when the computer was turned off. The next time I booted the computer, I could not even get the printer to turn on. Tried to print using the printer, but when I checked to see status of print jobs, it was noted that the printer was "off line". I have tried everything and am about to throw out this machine. Can anyone help? BTW, I hooked the printer up to an older computer with which I had previously used the printer and had the same problem.
