HP 4050 - Cold Reset shows FULL toner level

For the hell of it, I did a Cold Reset on my HP 4050N. I then printed a configuration page and the toner level shows completely FULL, when I know for a fact that I barely have any in there. An older configuration page shows a hiarline of toner left. What happened and how can I fix it?

The toner level indicator is governed by the counter being reset when a cartridge is installed, not by how much toner is actually in the cartridge. you will have to govern this cartridge and change it when it starts getting light prints and then reset the counter when you install a new cartridge. Cold reset, resets the toner counter.

I respectfully disagree with the page count theory. There isn't a page counter for the toner, but there is a maintenance count that should be reset when replacing the fusing assembly or installing a maintenance kit. Ignore the toner level indicator, it doesn't work very well.

Here's a quote out of the service manual:

"The Toner Cartridge has a Toner sensor. The circuit compares the
output value of the developing AC bias and the output value from the
antenna inside the Cartridge, and outputs the Toner detection signal.
The CPU detects the remaining Toner level and the presence of the
Cartridge when the developing bias is applied to the Developing
Cylinder. The remaining Toner level is always detected when the
developing bias is applied. The presence of the Cartridge is detected
only when the developing bias is applied during the initial rotation."
