Printer Guru's,

I am running into an interesting issue concerning a HP LaserJet 5100tn printer at a project site. I am currently supporting over 35 HP LaserJet 5100tn printers throughout the United States. Some of these printers are in office environments and some are located in construction trailers.

The printer will go into Powersave mode and becomes unavailable for network printing. If you try to ping the IP address assigned from DHCP, there is request timed out response. The printer must be turned off and on or the "Go" button must be pressed twice to enable the printer to accept print jobs from a print share setup on a print server. Has anyone experienced this?

The following steps have been taken to troubleshoot!

1. Replaced cat5e network cable between printer and Cisco catalyst 1900 switch.
2. Tried a different power outlet in trailer.
3. Tried a different network port on Cisco Catalyst 1900 switch.
4. Updated printer firmware and JetDirect firmware. (JetDirect 620N)
5. Tried a different switch (3COM switch)
6. A certified HP technician replaced the ECU unit and formatter board in this printer. I sent a different Jet Direct card and this did not help.
7.HP eventually sent my project a brand new HP LaserJet 5100tn printer. The new printer exhibited the same behavior.

The funny thing is that I cannot turn off the powersave feature from the remote console via WebJet Admin or cannot turn the feature off from WebJet Admin. It says disabled but goes into Powersave mode nonetheless.

Why does the printer go into Powersave mode despite the feature being disabled. Why is the printer unavailable for network printing? Could a power issue bring about this problem.

Respectfully,

Jon

Im not sure I completely understand the problem, but one thing u should change is DHCP. It is my understanding the the ip in a DHCP environment can change, thus u should never set up a printer as DHCP, instead assign it a static ip.

Responder,

I appreciate your time with your response. I should clarify! I setup network printers with a DHCP reservation. Essentially it is a static address as long as the DHCP reservation is not deleted or the DHCP server is available. Nonetheless clients will be able to print to the printer as HP JetDirect Cards will not flush the DHCP address.

I am trying to track down why the printer is unavailable for network printing after going into POwersave mode and why the printer goes into powersave mode in the first place if it has been disabled.

Appreciatively,

JOn

Try using an external print server...
