Greetings all,

I have an HP Laserjet 4 with a JetDirect J2550B card, firmware rev is
A.08.40. This was given to me by a friend and I would like to attempt configuring it for my network.

First how do I upgrade the firmware, then second how do I configure it for the network?

My network is a W2K/2K3 test bed/home network. I was under the impression that the JetDirect card is basically a print server and should receive ack from my DHCP server. I am also having a tough time trying to find documentation on setting up the printer. Any assistance and direction would be so appreciated.

TIA

you need to make sure that the computer is commincating with other computers if a peer to peer with a ip address such as 192.168.0.1 for one computer with the TCP/IP protocol in that you can set the ip address, subnet mask and dns in this protocol.

For example

Computer 1:
IP 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gate way: blank

DNS blank for this computer

Computer 2:
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.01

DNS: 192.168.0.1

DNS and default gateway can enable your internet connection on computer 1 to be shared with computer two.

Printer:
With DHCP you dont need to do this.

you can configure the jetdirect card with the same protocol, you can set this from the control panel:

go to MIO menu change with menu button, cfg network on=yes* change with item button and select yes with enter when cfg network=yes is selected.

now press menu button till you see cfg icp/ip=no then press item to make it icp/ip=yes select enter to make it yes* then press menu then turn off bootp this is what assigns the diffrent ips for DHCP with this off you can manually config the ip address press menu to cfg ip=no then press item to cfg=yes then press enter to make it yes* then press menu to seclect the ip address values make sure the values are set to your desire by using the +/- then enter to select it then item again and so on.

If successful, you can create IP port in the printer driver with the ip address selected in the printer.

Anyone want to add to that?

This particular printer only has a setting for Aux IO but with the same options; however, none of the changes stay, they go back to some default configuration.

Should there be an MIO configuration with the HPLJ? I wonder if this card is bad, wished I knew where to get another one. Let me know what you think pls.

TIA

AUX IO and MIO is the same thing, what sort of JetDirect card are you using?
Some JetDirect cards dont like modern networks.

If you want a good JetDirect I suggest you buy the JetDirect 400N

that is the most compatible.

Stuart.

The J2550B is capable of DHCP *but* not from the panel. Turn OFF the BOOTP option. Best way to set it is to set the IP address to a fixed unused address - if you have a private network addressing of 192.168.0.XX or 192.168.1.XX like most do then you merely set IP to a number with the first three octets (sections , ie the 192.168.0 or 192.168.1 part) the same as the rest of your network and the last octet to an unused IP maybe 100. The subnet will be 255.255.255.0 and the GW or gateway will be the IP of your router, or some server, or none. Once this is done and saved turn the printer off then back on and let it ride a second. Print a config sheet and you should see manual config with your IP info. Now if that works go to a network connected PC, click START, then RUN, then CMD. You'll get a DOS box open. In the prompt type TELNET <ip address of the printer> and hit enter. you should get an intro with instructions like / being show config. Show the help and look for the DHCP syntax. I think it will be DHCP:ON or similar. Bad thing is that your typing will not be echoed back to your console/monitor so type blind and carefully. Once you do this recheck the settings and ifDHCP is ON then do the command to save and exit - it's either QUIT or EXIT (oen saves and exits, one forgets the setting changes and exits). Once you have that and the DOS box is closed power the printer off then on. The older MIO's take about 2 mins total to talk to most DHCP enabled routers so be patient. Do a config page and see if your settings work.

As for firmware you need to get the Jetdirect Download Manager software and install on one machine. Run it, let it find your JD card. Find the selection to check for firmware updates and if one is available you can update with the Download Manager.

If for some reason you determine it is bad email me direct rhb57<at>alltel.net - have others cheap and I have a nice Extended Systems card that allow not only the LJ 4 but has a 25 pin parallel on the back for attaching a second parallel printer so on one print server you attach two printers. I had it in use on my 5Si until I went to an 8150DN which of course is EIO.

Patience is your finest yet least expensive tool you own

Agreed with that one, I think a fixed IP address would be the best option.
