View Full Version : Grubby output/Fuser problem?

Hi there,

I have an HP LaserJet 4050. Recently, it has started to give a 'grubby' output. The actual print quality if fine but there is what I can only describe as 'grubby' marks' down both edges to the paper.

I have done a half way test and don't think it is toner. That leaves the fuser. But since the fuser only heats up, it does not look like scorch marks (I don't think.)

I have thought about buying a new fuser but if this does not solve the problem, it was an expensive non-fix!

Should also add that although the output is clean, the toner cartridge is getting a bit old, but as mentioned above, I don't think this 'grubbiness' is toner (and I'm happy to be proven wrong!)

Does anyone on the forum have any ideas or thoughts on my problem

Many thanks in advance,

Rex

If you did a half way test and it looks good, then pull out the fuser and look at the grey (or sometimes brown) fixing film in the fuser. Check it for tears and toner residue. If it looks bad then replace the fuser.

Jeff,

Thanks for your reply.

Have already checked that part of the fuser and it looks just fine. Even kind of cleaned it with a dry cloth.

This 'grugginess' is very, very slight. I have done a number of half tests and am coming sot the conclusion that it may be toner but it is really hard to tell. It seems to be more present after a couple of sheets, as if it appears more when the printer has warmer up. Certainly, the first page is virtually clean but subsequent ones, ......

Think I will get a new toner cartridge and see if that makes a difference.

Have you any advice on new/reconditioned/refilled cartridges? Obviously that latter two are less expensive than the first choice.

Another thing occurs to me. This grubbiness looks like the toner drum is not being properly cleaned. May be the residue reservoir is full? If so, I know that one is not suppose to clean it, but do you know if it is possible and if so, where on the cartridge is the reservoir?

Many thanks,

Rex
