I just got a used Laserjet 4 Plus. It's printing a shade of gray (not black). I used this printer in an office where it printed black. I just replaced the tonor so that's not the problem. I also adjusted the print density to 5 (printed 20 pages) and it didn't change.

Thanks!

It looks like the optics in the laser unit could so with a clean, I posted the procedure in an earlier thread http://printertechsforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=587

I followed all the instructions and put the printer back together. It fires up (power and fan go on), but no lights (no Ready light, no On Line light) and it doesn't print.

Shall I disassemble and start over again? Sigh....

Thanks!

Sounds like you've forgot to plug the display assembly connector back in, just take off the top cover and you see it.

Yes, you were right. I had previously bent one of the prongs, so it wasn't properly plugged in.

The pages still print a uniformly grey shade. Any other suggestions?

Thanks very much!

Try cleaning the transfer roller. Even if it looks black, wipe your finger on it to see if there is a lot of toner build-up.
Check driver for correct settings. Check fuser for build-up. Replace.

Did you resolve this issue yet?

You said you changed the cartridge, is this after you moved it from the office where it was working okay?

If so it could still be a bad cartridge try another one see if it continues graying.
