I would like to know how to physically add an additional 256MB DDR module on a HP 4600N printer. Thanks.

Find the correct memory type/part number and bring it to a printer repair shop so they can add the memory for you. Laser printers DO NOT take the same RAM chips as computers, they also have one firmware RAM chip that cannot/should not be removed.

The HP 4600 service manual will contain the instructions on adding more RAM to your printer. However, unless the printer is on a very busy network, and has an enormous print queue, and you are getting memory overflows, you will not require more RAM, it would be a waste of money.

RAM will not make your printer print faster. It simply allows it to hold more jobs in queue, or print enormous picture files.

installing memory is fairly simple, although having a tech come out and give your printer a nice cleaning and installing it at the same time might not be a bad idea.

if you do wish to do it yourself, make sure you get the right memory for you printer..that said.

1. print a configuration page
2. power down the printer remove the cable and the nic card if installed.
3 remove the formatter this is held in by about 6 or so screws it slides out

would now be a good time to mention a ground strap would be good but failing having one, careful handeling and grounding yourself to the printer fram should be ok.

3.remove the formatter this is held in by about 6 or so screws it slides out

4. Without removing the DImms in place you may now install the memory in an available slot, if you've done it for a PC it's pretty much the same.

5. put it all back together and print anouther configuration page to verify the memory is installed.

By the way there are some known firmware bugs on this printer, check your firmware version and update at this time if needed. if your firmware is what shipped with the printer...you might save a bit of money on supplies and/or repairs if you take care of it now.

again this is the printer firmware...not the jetdirect.
