i have a customer with a lj4050 that when a job is given the rollers attempt to pick up the paper from tray2 but the paper falls back into the tray. it will attempt a 2nd time with the same result. i have tried a totally different tray 2 with no luck. pickup rollers are all new. the paper feeds fine from the manual tray. help!!

In the tray itself beside the feed roller is a plastic piece in the shape of a roller, I belive it is called a torx regulator. Anyway take that piece off, try to print if it prints fine without that piece you can let it out but you can also try taking that piece off and inside is a magnet with iron shavings around it, remove some of the iron shavings and put it back it. If the printer works without it, it should work after you remove some iron shavings and put it back in aslo.

If the paper never gets out of the tray into the paper path Id try to clean the roller pick up with an alcohol prep. I work at a hospital so we have tons of them around but paper towel and regular rubbing alcohol would work too. If the roller feels or looks smooth even a little bit in random areas its time to replace the pick up rollers. printertechs has them on the cheap and they are perfect.

Try replacing the feed and separation rollers, but it could very well be that the paper feed assembly needs replacing. We see this quite often.

you said you tryed anouther tray allready so i'm going to offer a couple other things to check.
1. look at the "push" roller assembly , this is under the printer behind the blue pickup roller, it has several cresent shapped rollers on it...make sure there is a spring on the end that helps the roller return to it's proper home position.
2. try to take a peice of medium stiffness paper and feed it up the path from the tray into the printer, this is test and make sure someone has'nt had a jam and only removed half a page leaveing the other half blocking the path, this area can be hard to see, and removingn the jam there can be a bit tricky.

Remove and clean or replace those four "D" rollers.

When you say the pickup rollers are all new. Please define exactly which rollers you believe were replaced.
In Tray 2, there are a total of 6 *rollers*... the one in the paper tray, the one that mates it that is in the tray slot on the printer and then the 4 D rollers a little further back in the tray slot.
Since you said you tried another tray, then that rules out the *torque* piece the other guy was talking about. Although, you can get these for no more than a couple of dollars and they have been known to need replacement.
Everything the rest have said though seems to be right on the money. I would check them first.
