looked at one of these today and it has a Bad Opt Tray Connection message.

it appeared to me the tray was connected correctly. I thought perhaps the connector on the envelope tray was the culprit. It looked like on the top portion of the connector there are 3 "prongs", the prong looking piece that was farthest on the right appears to be half the length of the others.
It didn't look like anything was bent in there, I tried poking around with a spring hook but it didn't seem to hit anything that was bent. I took a photo with my phone but that area came out really dark. I can't recall ever seeing another one of these feeders so I can't say if that is how that connector should look. The connector on the machine looked ok.

You have to turn the printer off and on for the message to clear and remove the envelope feeder. It prints ok without that in there.

I don't think many parts are available, I see 2 listed in the LJ4100 manual.

Do any other envelope feeders work on that machine? LJ4000 maybe?

thanks.

The envelope feeder is a C8053B accessory and works on both 4000 and 4100 series printers. I do a lot of envelopes and have two of these, one is a spare. If it is giving an error then it is likely an electronic problem with the circuit board in the envelope feeder. These are getting scarcer and more expensive from what I see on a quick search of the Internet. They come new for about $150, refurb which means they plugged it in and printed a few pages, or used which means take your chances. Roller kits are available but this would be the case if you were getting misfeeds and jams. IMHO you need a replacement feeder and save the old one for parts.
