HP Laserjet 4200n loses connection to PC

Windows XP SP2, parallel cable. prints test page, etc off console and works well for awhile, but then loses connection to PC and "document failed to print" banner pops up. After a restart, prints fine again. What kind of gremlin is this?

Well, you have a formatter on one end and the PC on the other end.
Plug another printer into the parallel cable and see what happens. Or plug your
printer into another PCs parallel port to see what happens.
