Laserjet 4050N Intermittently Resetting Then Blank Screen

Hi everyone, this is my first time here.

I'm trying to help a friend with his LJ 4050N printer. It starts up showing asterisks then goes to a ready mode. (I think that's normal?) But after a few minutes it does this again, and a few minutes later, again. Eventually the Display goes blank and nothing works until I power it off and on.

I removed the formatter board and reinstalled it. Now it seems to be happening less often.

I have been able to print some pages from a PC and from the Control panel.

So, is it the formatter board? If so, can I get one cheaper than HP's refurbed from their parts site? And where?

The first part we would swap is the formatter, but you can't be 100% certain that that is the problem. We have them in stock for less than HP -- 608-831-2396.
