I have a LaserJet 4050N printer that will not print using the normal 8 1/2 x 11 size paper.

For example, if I print the Menu Maps it will print the first page and the LCD display asks me to insert A5 paper into Tray 1. I can hit the green GO button and it will force it to print on the "Letter" size but this is not the solution I am looking for. The same thing happens when I try to print from a computer.

What I have tried:

Restoring Factory Defaults
Removing memory dimm
Resetting the printer in the Service Menu

If anyone knows what else I can try or if I need to replace the formatter board... Let me know what you think...

Thanks,

The first thing to do is to print a configuration page, and if you have to feed a page into tray 1 to do so, then do it.

This will tell you what size the printer thinks tray 2 is set to.

Assuming that the printer thinks the tray is set to something other than Letter, check the tray guides and backstop to ensure it is in fact set to the Letter position. If possible, use a tray from another printer to be absolutely sure.

If the tray is set to Letter and is not faulty, and the printer still thinks it is set to something else, then it is possible that the paper feeder control pca is faulty. This is the bit that senses the settings on the paper tray.

If, according to the condfiguration page, tray 2 is set to Letter, and you are getting LOAD <X> messages, then the problem is to do with the job data the printer is receiving. The job data is specifying another paper size. Change the page setup in the print job and/or the printer driver settings.

Good luck
