I've been given the task of resolving this issue and my research so far has led me to believe the fuser may be loose or broken and is too expensive to replace? Before I open the printer up to look for the fuser & see if it's loose I wondered if anyone has any tips or advice I could use?

The fuser is actually very easy to replace on that model. If you turn the printer around to the back you will find some small blue locking levers. You just release the blue levers, pull on the grey plastic towards you and the fuser slides right out.

I don't know who advised against replacing the fuser. That is standard maintenance on any laser printer, it's a consumable part and you should expect the fuser to wear out every few years. To get a comparable business-class laser color printer with fax, copy, scan etc. you'll be paying at least in the $600-$800 range, and for the better-quality series a multi-function printer is over $1000. Of course, there are plenty of cheap models out there, in the $200-$300 range, but they are not comparable to what you have, they are essentially "junk." :-)

Here's a link to the recommended fuser/maintenance kit: http://printertechsdotcom.stores.yahoo.net/hpcola282828.html

If it were me, I would change the fuser.

Thanks very much for the quick response Steve, I found a you tube video that quickly told me I had the fuser in my hands already, LOL Yes it seems that your spot on! I'll put it to the client that they should replace it.
I've suggested they network their office computers via a file server for sage, files and cheaper printing and do away with the printers each PC has each and just use the HP over the network to save money in the long term but they're happy to do it their way
At least I know what I need so thanks again for the quick advice :)
