View Full Version : 8150 LVPS replacement procedure

Hey,
I stupidly bought a replacement fuser for one of my 8150s. I have 2 other 8150s and should have tested the suspect fuser on one of them. Turns out that the old is ok.
So, after reading here and elsewhere about it, it looks like I probably need a new LVPS. Can some one send me the replacement procedure as I can't seem to find it on the web. Alternatively, can someone point me to a place to purchase the service manual. Also, where is a good place to buy a new or refurbished or used but guaranteed LVPS.
I learned my lesson with the fuser - If swapping the LVPS is not too much of a hassle, I'm going to take a known good one and put it in the malfuntioning printer prior to getting a new one !

We got 'em, refurbished and new. Instructions in the box.

I know its an old thread but why are we replacing LVPS so much? Is that the first step in resolving 50.1 errors or something?

Yeah, the Low Voltage Power Supply on the 8100 & 8150 is a known problem. 50.1 errors on those printers are usually a bad LVPS. Laserjets 5si/8000's are different, they rarely have a problem with the LVPS.

But everyone is doing the proper steps first instead of charging a customer for a costly replacement when a cheaper solution may be found right?
Check the power outlet, verify the printer isn't sharing plugs with other large devices etc? I've seen too many 50.1's because the printer is in a room with 8 others sharing outlets & circuits or sitting beside Xerox or other copy machines.
I have received far too many phone calls from ASP's asking for help on the 50.1 after they have replaced DC Controllers, formatters & LVPS on these things with no resolve when it was simply an issue of available power.
Customers certainly aren't happy people when they find out something simple & cheap could have resolved it rather than up to $1000 in parts & labour.

Good point. It never hurts to check the power and fuser first.
You're using 240 volt versions of that printer right? Maybe that has some bearing. It's a different power supply. We have 110 volt printers and I can't say that I've ever had a customer get a 50.1 error due to power issues. It's almost always the LVPS and if not, the fuser.

Yeah now its the 220 volt, I moved here in January this year. Worked for HP doing support for these printers last year though in Canada supporting customers & ASP's so I am used to the north american setup.

I have been reading about people replacing the LVPS to solve the 50.1 error, I have never seen one fail here, but I might add that I live in a 240V country, that will be the difference.
