I need to replace the power supply in my Laser Jet III. My service company said they could not get it from their supplier(s), but if I can get it they would install it. They said the p/n is RG1-2702. Can anybody confirm that P/N? The HP site doesn't have anything on the LJ III anymore.

Also, I found the RG1-2702 on the web and was surprised to fine the price for a refurb ranges from 7.00 (Canada) to 200.00 - and for new from 60.00 to 140.00. Why such a range? Can I trust a refurb (not the 7.00 one!)?

Go to Google and you will find lots of them. The prices seem quite high. Unless you have a lot of toner on hand it might be better to go to a newer model.
I do a lot of printing and my choice is the HP 4000. You can probably find a good one in the $100 to $200 range. You can get parts and accessories
for that model and refilled toner cartridges are reasonable. The only thing that model does not have is a USB port.

I agree with BigAl on this one -- I wouldn't put ANY money into a LaserJet III, they were solid printers but now the parts beings sold are so old, there's no guarantee how long a replacement power supply will last.

BTW The word "refurb" is tossed around a lot -- most if not all of these "refurb" parts for a model this old are just going to be "pulled and cleaned" , no electronic work actually done to repair the boards.

Also, you mentioned you saw some new ones for sale, but I'm pretty sure no one is really going to stock new power supplies for this model anymore, HP stopped making them years ago -- whoever is listing them as new probably just can't tell the difference between new & refurb, or else they're hoping you can't tell the difference when you buy it :-)

Good replacement printers are 4000, 4200.
