View Full Version : HP Color LaseJet 3550 printing problem

Recently I bought an HP Color Laserjet 3550 on eBay from a reputable seller. All the toner cartridges were HP originals but the blue and magenta toners were low. The printer worked perfectly and when these toners had nearly run out I bought refill toner from an established company, also on eBay. I refilled the cartridges successfully but I didn’t read the instructions properly and failed to complete the operation which involved cutting holes to remove the waste toner.

I continued to use the printer until magenta smears appeared on the printed output so I contacted the toner refill company for advice, and the problem was immediately identified as excess waste toner. I cut the holes as required and removed the waste toner. The printer worked fine for a few more prints and then the print started to fade on the right hand side of the printed pages. I cleaned and recalibrated the printer and again it was fine for about half a dozen pages and then the problem returned. I removed each cartridge in turn and gave it a shake in case the toner had settled in one end. This didn’t help. I’ve read all the relevant sections of the manuals but my fault isn’t listed. I followed the print quality procedure in the menu and only the yellow page printed properly.

I don’t know much about laser printers, especially colour, and as I was busy and I have another colour printer I left it until I could devote more time to the problem. I decided to tackle the problem today so to remind myself I repeated the cleaning, recalibrating and print quality check procedures, including cleaning the inside of the printer where loose toner had accumulated. Again the yellow page is OK, the magenta page is faded in a sawtooth pattern (half of the “E” vertical band) at the extreme right, the blue is faded (“D & E” bands) for the right third of the page, and the black for about the right quarter(half way between “D & E” to the edge). By faded I mean no colour whatsoever. When I examine the configuration page that is printed after the colour test pages I notice that there is print and colour blocks and bands on that page where there is no matching colour or black on the test pages. I can’t work out what I have done so that the same fault appears on three of the four test pages when all was OK before I cut the waste toner holes.

I really don’t know what to do next. My other printer is quite expensive to run so I’m keen to fix the laser. I’d be grateful for any suggestions that might help. I can include scans of the pages if required. I’ve done a forum search but haven’t found anything referring to my problem. Thanks in advance.

The three colors all use the same things to print, so the only logical conclusion is the cartridges.

I've never heard of refilling laser cartridges by cutting a hole and putting more toner in it. The part that typically wears out around the same time the toner is used up is the drum. Each cartridge has it's own drum, so most likely the colors that look bad have worn out drums in them.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm not sure where you're based but the procedure I followed is advertised in both the UK & USA. I would agree with you 100% about the probability of worn crtridges if it weren't for the fact that the printer worked perfectly when I refilled the cartridges, not recommended I agree, but failed when I removed the cartridges to discard the waste toner. The black, cyan & magenta failed at EXACTLY the same time, and when I came back to the printer after leaving it for a few weeks (I was very busy) I re-ran the print quality procedure to produce the separate colour pages and the magenta was almost completely blank, barely visible, and only returned to its previous faded state after cleaning and calibrating. I'm not doubting what you say but it just seems too coincidental for the cartridges to be OK one minute then 3 out of 4 fail simultaneously. However, I still don't know what to do.

I'm in the US, but it doesn't really matter. Color printers work the same no matter where they are at.

The black is the only color that has any parts separate from the other three. They all use the transfer belt and all the other parts, so if one of the colors prints perfectly but the other three do not, it is only logical that the problem lies with the cartridges.

I've been working on printers for 10 years and have yet to see one that I couldn't fix. I have never heard of anyone refilling laser cartridges, that is an absolutely horrible idea and I would avoid any company or dealer that sells that type of stuff. Your cheapest solution is probably to buy a new low end color printer. If you are dead set on keeping that printer I would advise OEM cartridges. The only re-manufactured ones that I would purchase are ones that could be bought locally so that you can return them when they are bad. Online places sell garbage because they know it's not worth people's hassle to keep sending bad ones back to them.

Pantalica, I think ridered74 is correct in his diagnosis (failing cartridges). I'm wondering if you accidentally emptied the toner hopper rather than the waste hopper. Either way, although it seems unusual for all 3 to be failing at once, that's not unheard of.

Although some folks have temporary success with that refilling method, it's essentially a gamble because technically the cartridges do have parts that wear out and should be replaced (drums, rollers, wiper blades, etc).

We (PrinterTechs) sell great quality compatible cartridges which are still much more affordable than the OEM. http://www.printertechs.com/toner.php
