View Full Version : Anyone Ever Have An EMI Problem With A P2055d Printer?

I have a user that had a LJ4100 printer (parallel) for eight years directly under a fluorescent light. He never had any problems with it. But when we replaced the 4100 with a new P2055d, the bulb started flickering like crazy every time he prints something. No problem when it's idling. Moving the printer away from the bulb as far as the USB cable will allow helps a lot. But he doesn't want the printer in the middle of his desk (and I don't blame him). I can get an EMI line filter. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this? HP, of course, says they have no reports of this on any other P2055d printers.
Thanks for any feedback.

Try putting the printer on a long extension cord, heavy enough to handle the current draw and plug the cord into a circuit in another room that is on a different circuit breaker. I think the new printer's fuser is drawing just enough current to affect the light fixture. I cannot imagine the radiation from the printer, and there is a little with most any electronic device using high voltages, to cause problems with the light. Chances are good that the light and all the outlets are on the same circuit and that circuit may be close to overload depending on what else is in the room. There may be a problem with the ballast transformer in the light, but this is unlikely. The only solution may be to replace the flourscent fixture with an incandescent fixture, or run a new circuit for the printer.

Unfortunately there are several offices on the same breaker, and the LJ4100 draws more current that the P2055d does. So this is what I did:
I went out and bought a 12' USB cable, then took it and a 6' power strip up to his room on a cart. I put the printer on the cart and started moving it away from the light.
At 3' you have to look at the light to see any flicker; at 5' the printer has no affect whatsoever on the light. I think I'm going to see if we can get a small credenza to put beside his desk. That will resolve his problem.
Good suggestions.
Thanks for the feedback,
