Close top cover error will not stop and the top cover is closed. will not reset. has been happening for a few months and shutting down the printer for a few minutes would usually reset it but now it will not reset. please help
OK. I've done all the posted advise. Thank you. But it didn't work. I have replaced the sensor switch for the cover, and that didn't work. I still get the close top cover message. please help :(

Take off the cover and slightly bend the arm that operates the cover open switch, that should do it.

OK,
But before you do this you could put a thin object into the slot that is over the cover open sensor, it's in the right hand corner near the label, by pressing it doen the cover open message should disappear.
If this does work you can try to bend the arm over the sensor:
Open the cartridge cover, you will see two screws, remove those and release the plastic arm that is attatched to the cover.
Open the back door, you'll see two more screws.
Pull back the back half of the right side cover, press a small flat screwdriver in the small slot near the label in the cover, you'll now be able to lift off the whole of the top cover, be carefull with the cable that goes to the display, you can slide that off too.
In the lower right hand corner you'll see a switch with a metal strip over it, this is the cover open sensor, by bending this upward a bit it will react sooner to the cover closing.
