Hello Again,

Boy, I am simply being bombarded with odd ball printer issues. I have a color LJ 4600 that is leaving thin vertical line from top to bottom of every page. They are black, red, and blue. They appear on both sides of the pages.

As always, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

From the Defects manual it looks like Cleaning Blade Streaks.

Print the Diagnostic PQ pages to identify the defective cartridge or cartridges.
Run Disable Cartridge Check. Remove one of the cartridges.
Run the PQ test again. Check for the defect.
Do it for all the cartridges.
Replace the bad ones.

You have a "65" printer number which should be greater than "6D". It would be interesting to see if you observe an orange toner leaking from the magenta cart. Also it would be interesting for you to empty the waste hopper of the magenta cart before scrapping or recyling it. If orange, you have a flawed DC control board mentioned below.

Description
Description
NOTE: This advisory provides minor updates and an extension of the service expiration date to 31-Dec-2006 for the Toner Purge on CLJ4600 Service Notes: C9660A-07, C9661A-07, C9662A-07, C9663A-07, C9692A-07.
The printer can experience a streaking or leaking magenta cartridge when it is set to:
• use Tray 1 for print jobs, AND
• while having Tray 1 set to Any paper size / Any paper type, AND
• Auto or Mostly Black Color Mix is selected in the Control Panel settings.
What happens is that, after monochrome print jobs printed from Tray 1 when Tray 1 is set to ANY (size) and ANY (type), the printer will perform a cleaning cycle. The cartridges are supposed to collect their own waste toner, but because of incorrect bias applied by some early versions of the DC Controller, the magenta collects the cyan, yellow and magenta waste toner. This is why the toner appears to be red-orange in color (not pure magenta) that either leaks inside the printer or streaks onto the printed page.
The issue is caused by the toner purge cycle which occurs after every monochrome job printed from Tray 1 when Tray 1 is set to Any paper size/Any paper type. This cleaning cycle pushes out some toner to clean the OPC surface of the cartridges and collects in the waste toner cavity in the individual cartridges.
Cartridges should to collect their own waste toner but, because of incorrect bias applied by some early versions of the DC Controller, the magenta collects waste from all thee colors (cyan, yellow and magenta). This is why the toner appears to be red-orange in color (not pure magenta) that either leaks inside the printer or streaks onto the printed page.
Troubleshooting
1. Confirm that the issue appears as red-orange colored toner streaking on the printed page or red-orange leaking inside the printer. See photos below for hue of the leaking toner to confirm.
Red-orange “purge” from waste hopper Red-orange toner leaked inside printer

2. NOTE: If the color of toner “leaking” from the magenta cartridge is pure magenta, this service advisory does not apply and will not fix the problem. Please contact HP Customer Support for more complete troubleshooting to accurately identify root cause.
3. Confirm that the DC Controller is an older DC Controller as follows:
o Print a Configuration Page
o Verify that Printer Number (located on the Configuration Page under Printer Information) is less that 6D.
NOTE: If the Printer Number is equal to or greater than 6D, this service advisory does not apply.
SCOPE
This advisory affects:
• C9660A - HP Color LaserJet 4600 Printer
• C9661A - HP Color LaserJet 4600dn Printer
• C9662A - HP Color LaserJet 4600dtn Printer
• C9663A - HP Color LaserJet 4600hdn Printer
• C9692A - HP Color LaserJet 4600n Printer
RESOLUTION
The issue has been fixed with a DC Controller revision. The new DC Controller reduces the number of cleaning cycles so the waste toner cavity does not fill up.

SERVICE ACTION
Follow the actions below:
1. Replace the DC Controller, then print a Configuration page. Verify that the Printer Number under the Printer Information Section is listed as 6D or higher.
2. Clean any excess toner on the ETB and the interior of the printer, using a cleaning cloth.
3. Replace the magenta print cartridge.
4. After re-assembly, confirm that the printer is operating normally by printing a test page.
Beside the DC Controller replacement, it is suggested that at least the paper size is selected when loading paper in Tray 1. This will prevent excessive wear of the ETB due to cleaning cycles and will result in a better cost-per-page.
