My HP 4100N started out a few months ago intermittently giving the 51.1 printer error. Recycling the power would correct the situation for awhile. Now I cannot print anything, everytime I try to print I get this error. I found 1 article on the web stating it was the Laser scanner and that 51.1 is a beam detect error. They also suggested I use the replacement part RG5-5100.

So I called HP and they told me the part was $281, ouch! They said if I knew exactly what part of the scanner was broken, I could order that instead of the entire scanner.

Has anyone encounter this. Help! This printer is being used primarily for a non-profit organization.

You could check with PrinterTechs.com to see if they have a refurbished Laser Scanner available. I know you can get a refurbished Laser Scanner from the Printer Works for $ 169.

I think its best to check the connectors inside the printer first to make sure they are seated and clean connections first that can cause this problem too.

If the mirrors/ lens of the scanner are very dusty that can cause errors, but it could well be the scanner motor.

I've seen this error a few times now, cleaning the lenses and mirrors can solve it, but I've also seen a Polygon motor that had it's bearing wearing and couldn't turn freely.
