We have a laserjet 4MV that is very reliable and would like to keep it however it currently is displaying a 50 service message on the display and HP is unable to help as the printer is no longer under warranty. Does anyone know how to resolve this in order to continue using the printer.

This is most likely a fuser error. Replace the fuser and you should be fine. Good luck.

could be both fuser and power supply at fault here, sometimes faulty power supplies can cause the fuser to blow its heater and sometimes even DC controllers as well.

To reset the 50 error, I believe that you have to have the printer powered off for 20 minutes.
Be aware that if after you change the fuser and the 50 error comes back, the cause was probably the P.S. and it just took out your new fuser. :)

It's fun being a printer tech!

Im beginning to think that this is a bunch of "hit and miss" guesses on the part of many posters.
Your 4V simply has a bad fuser, period. 1st! Take the power cord and remove it to another room! this will prevent you from doing something stupid.
2nd! Remove the network cable! Now, let it sit at room temperature for about 20 mins. Install a new fuser, and lightly baste with toner, no just kidding.
Technical alert! If the P\S was bad you would get most likely get a motor error. There are several other things that can give an erroneous "50" , but that could take some digging. Do you know about replacing the Transfer roller, the registration roller {black only} the separation pad? Face down roller and even the gearbox, or the H\V assy. OR...open the small door in front,{thats the fuser access door} and look at the wee small gears. Any missing? Ah Ha! could be worse. Bye.
