Hi all
Thanks for the recent response to my questions, I have a hp4200 to which Ive fitted a610n network card, I know it should have a 615n but ive already got one of those paper weights. Ive set the card to a static ip address away from the usual pcs and stuff that normally connects to the network, all good so far, but what protocols do I need? I use a mixture of win xp and 7 pcs.

I know I need tcp/ip
I think I need ipx/spx??????
I dont think I want apple talk, ive already disabled it?
Havent got a clue about dlc/llc (maybe mac??)
ditto about snmp

The only one ive disabled is appletalk

I would like to disable stuff I dont need, advice please
Thanks again

My 4550n is networked to a vista pc, a windows 2000P pc, and an OS-10.6 mac, via cat 5 ethernet lines.
They all communicate fine via the static IP address and TCP/IP. I have disabled IPX/SPX, Novell/netware, and AppleTalk. I did need to set the Mac protocol (on the computer, not the printer) to IP and HP Jet direct.

Once I accidentally set the printer to DLC/LLC, trying to get a really old mac to talk to it, and the results were disastrous. It was difficult to navigate the printer's menus to reset it to TCP/IP. So I do not recommend DLC/LLC, even though I have not specifically disabled it. Hmmm, if I ever get my cartridges back in place (see post above), maybe I should.

Listen to the major.
Go to TCP/IP, use manual settings. Set the IP, Subnet mask, and Def gateway.
Disable Apple talk and IPX and don't worry about SNMP. Even if you don't disable that other stuff it's not going to hurt anything.
When you plug in the LAN cable look for the green lite on the JD. Print a config page and make sure that the Jet Direct is READY

Hi, ive already set an ip manually along with the mask and gateway. The network is working well but I just wondered about disabling stuff I dont need, what about the dlc/llc what is it?
thanks
