Is there a universal printer driver for Windows XP that would help me save the trouble of installing new printer drivers every time we need to switch to a new generation of printers?

Thanks a lot

Technically for best print quality, speed, etc. you should download the exact drivers when you install new printers. However, generally speaking, most HP LaserJet printer drivers are fairly cross-compatible. For example you can print a text document or a Word document just fine to a LaserJet 4000 printer using a LaserJet 5 driver.

The only problem comes in rare cases when you're printing complex data like forms, graphics, etc. You may see slight alignment issues where items are slightly off from the way they appear in the software, or you may find that advanced features like EconoMode or AutoCollate don't work.

So, if you want to: next time you replace the printers leave the same drivers and see what happens. :-) But again, usually it's best to install new drivers if you have the time.
