Hi --
Just got a 4550 from the gf's boss. Thought i had a fatty come up, until i plug it in and try and use it....
The problem i'm having is that nothing gets printed on the page. if a job is started the printer continuously feeds paper in and out till it runs out(or power is killed) but never prints anything. There is also a good deal of green dust inside the printer.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance, i really appreciate anyones help.

I would start with giving the printer a good clean.

Hi
Sounds like you have more than one problem here.
First you say that a print job doesn't print anything on the paper but also (second) the paper feed does not stop when the print job has finished it just carries on until all the paper has gone or it is switched off.
The first sounds like a laser / image roller problem. The second sounds more serious and I think associated with the formatter board. (thats the board which the parallel or network card (NIC) sits in.
For the first I would check your supplies status and replace any that have reached zero. If they are all OK then your looking at a laser failure or similar.
For the second I would start with a cold reset to factory settings. You need a manual to tell you how to do this (see HP support site) but most HP prints reset by holding down the PAUSE/RESUME button and the ITEM button while you switch on. This will reset your format board but it will also reset eveything else including your NIC if you have one. Once done, reboot and test.
DO this and see how things go
PS Printers must be kept clean. Toner is not good for you. Never blow it arround. Use a damp cloth or toner vacuum cleaner (regular vacuum cleaners will not do). If you get on your clothes use COLD water to wash it off.
Hope this helps

Has this unit been moved? Mayby dropped? There is a solonoid in the left front corner of the printer that can be seen with the ITB taken out.
It's flapper may have popped out. Replace the ITB drawer if worn rollers.
Check the connector in the printer that the ITB goes to for paper scraps, or dust. YES! cleaning is absolutely necessary! There are a lot of sensors in this unit that need to be clean. Remove all consumables, ITB drawer, back door, and the waste tray under the carousel. Then blow the heck out of it.
Spin the carousel and blow out the sides as well. Luck, MT

Is the paper blank or does it have straght lines on it?
I've heard of times when the engine test switch gets jammed. Seems like it was in conjunction with one of the other sensors.

You get this problem when the ITB-unit out of live. It has a mechanical counter and a elektronic counter. When the mechanical counter is out, then you get this problem.

replace the transfer belt assembly simple soultion, I have a CLJ 4500 with the same problem and I simply turn the belt with the knob like things on the top of it and that gets it going, try that first.
That green dust is toner, thats normal but keep it at a minuim.

I have the same problem. It is frustrating because if I pull out the Drum Kit in the top front drawer and "jiggle" it then it will print a job or two and then resume not printing. Like the previous post the printer will run paper till out.
