This printer develops a line of toner on the drum. It does it with HP original cartridges as well as with remanufactured and new compatible cartridges. I have tried cartridges from 5 different suppliers including HP. I changed the High Voltage Power Supply and the DC Controller and the problem eventually returned. I would appreciate any ideas.

Is it a horizontal line or a vertical line?
A vertical line might be caused by a stuck bit in memory.
A horizontal line might be from a bad formatter. Usually the formatter drives the laser scanner that writes the dot pattern on the print drum in the cartridge. The formatter also carries the memory DIMM. Sometimes reseating the DIMM three times to wipe of any corrosion can fix this kind of problem.
A blank area vertically down the page can be a contaminated lens or mirror in the laser scanner assy.
Please let us know what you find.

It's a horizontal line and it takes some weeks to develop. For example an original HP cartridge lasted about 35,000 pages before the problem ocurred. I replaced the cartridge yesterday with a compatible and expect the line to appear in a few weeks.

We have seen oils/residue from certain brands of aftermarket transfer rollers (non-HP brand) damage toner cartridge drums after sitting for a while, and the damage to the toner drum will leave a mark similar to what you describe ... I would try a new transfer roller ...
