I am trying to self-publish my book (300 pages) at home. The paper size for the book is half standard size - 5.5" by 8.5". It is special rim-ridged paper, so I can't use standard size 8.5 x11 and then cut it in half.

I am looking for a printer that will accept the blank half-size paper, that would have at least 250 sheet input tray for this smaller paper (most printers have the big trays only for standard size paper), so I don't have to get confused with a lot of little piles of finished pages.

Also, it has to be able to do duplex printing. Manual duplex is acceptable, auto-duplex would really be great.

So far, I have found lots of printers that do auto-duplex - but only for standard size paper.

Also, it has to be a laser printer, because I think an inkjet printer is going to go through cartridges too fast to make it cost-effective (a penny a page adds $3 to the cost of printing one book).

In summary, a laser printer, with a long-lasting cartridge, with an input tray that can handle, in volume, odd-size (5.5 x 8.5) paper, and that is able to do duplex.

Any ideas?

I've talked to quite a few people about printing books from home, and generally my advice is, "If you're looking for professional results, don't do it from home, you'll probably be disappointed in the cost and quality."

HP's printers only accept a maximum of 100 standard-weight sheets through the manual feed tray, so you will be reloading the paper fairly regularly.
