I have someone at one of our branch offices complaining that their HP LJ 2420 gets a jam in tray 2 every print and makes a squeaking noise every time they print and I'm not sure what to replace on it to correct this problem. This is hard for me to diagnose as this office is located in Indiana and I work at an office in Alabama.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi:
We have a lot of these. One problem is the paper size adjustment in the paper tray. The teeth are very fine so the tray can be adjusted for lots of paper lengths. It is very easy to get this adjustment off when people load the paper or close the tray with too much force. If the adjustment slips back then the paper is too far back and the feed roller cannot get the paper to the sensor in time. Too tight and every few pages the roller cannot get that paper moving at all.

Another problem seems to happen when the tray gets dropped. The dark grey front of the tray pops off. When the user tries to put it back on then the paper level indicator with the "C" shaped end gets above or below the sheet metal that supports the paper stack in the tray. This "C" shaped end should straddle the metal. Then the paper will only feed with a certain level of paper loaded.

My users seem to use cheap paper that has a lot of dust. When the feed roller gets too dusty it will just not feed paper. The roller is usually OK unless the printer has a page count around 150K sheets. It just needs to be wiped off with a damp rag. I usually flood it with OOPS, an alcohol based solvent that also seems to restore the urethane rubber somewhat. Followed by a compressed air/canned gas cleaning usually does it. A damp rag and water work fine though.

Hope this helps. Let us know what you find.

Al

Thanks Al, I will have someone at that location try out these suggestions and see if that helps any. I appreciate it!

it might be the paper sensor flag in the tray 2, it's common to see that after a paper jam the people try to clear it by pulling the paper out no matter how hard its the stuck.
well this kind of action results on a sahft missalinegment and a missmatch of the flag with the paper sensor on the tray 2
the missalinegment of the shaft it's the cause of the noise and the paper jams, that's because the shaft doesn't turn very well and so the spin of the pick up.
it's always the same thing, but what's posted above by others it might be as well the cause. hope this help you whith your trouble.

Oddly, I found a strip of orange tape still on an inside roller shaft of the p/u assy. Had to remove to see it. Also, the inner rollers could be worn and squeek on the black plastic rollers of the upper assy.
