We are having a problem with growling HP 3005 printers.
One just failed, giving a gear tooth clicking problem when the
fuser starts to turn. One of our techs worked on this issue.

He found the offending gear: RU5-0957.

There is so much stress on this gear that the teeth become
deformed. At first there is a soft growling noise then the gear
starts slipping. Page count on this one is 60,000 and this is
the first one we have seen that failed completely. The gear
is very easy to change once you get the fuser out. The mating
gears seem to be OK

Has anyone else seen this? Please let us share your wisdom.

This is a similar problem to the 2400 fuser gear growling problem...

Bushings wear out that support the fuser's pressure roller, cause the pressure roller to ride too low, then the pressure roller gear and its drive gear begin to wear out...

Al, it's a known problem. Instead of the swingplate, on this printer its the RU5-0957 and the fuser. Whenever I order a fuser for the 3005 a 17 tooth gear is in a baggy stapled to the inside of the box.

Just make sure that you don't lose the "fixing thrust stopper" that sits on the shaft above our 17 T gear. It will drop into the bowels of the printer.
