Sirs,
It's been well documented that the HP P2015 has a bad formatter and they're dying left and right. My location has about 50 of these dead printers. Unfortunately, theres no warrenty on these. I'd like to purchase 50 formatters to fix all these but need to know that these new formatters are redesigned and won't fail enmasse like the old ones.
Has anyone heard anything about a replacement formatter for the P2015?
Thanks

"What is actually wrong with your 50 formatters?
What is the firmware date code on your 50 formatters?

In answer to your question...there is nothing listed for the formatter under "known problems" for the p2015. There is nothing listed in the service notes pertaining to the formatter of the p2015.

Where is it "well documented that the HP P2015 has a bad formatter and they're dying left and right."?

DC057, you're right about the formatter problem being widespread ... (I assume you are getting the 'false paper jam' message). ...

However, I'm not seeing any documentation that HP has done any redesign work on their formatter boards ... if you buy a new formatter board, it would be safest to just expect the same life expectancy as you had on the original board.

Alternatively, you can go with a refurbished board ... the electronic components replaced on the refurbished boards may actually be more stable than the original design , we are carrying them at PrinterTechs; and that can also be a bit cheaper option than buying the new ones directly through HP...

You might consider replacing the printers with known good workhorse printers like the Laserjet 4000 series.

For the money you spend on replacing the boards, the time you spend installing the boards, and the risk of them failing again, you might as well get something that lasts 10-20 years like a LJ 4000. In the long run you'll actually save money because the toner cost per page is much lower, and they need less maintenance. But I know management rarely listens to those who know. Those who spend the money often do the exact opposite of good advice. (That wasn't directed at you but corporate and government managers in general).

The issue was with a Toshiba chip. It is replaced on newer formatters.
Have not had any trouble with the new ones.

Thanks all.....
Yes...its the false paper jam error. If a specific part has been determined the problem (Toshiba chip), them hopefully all new boards will be safe (relatively speaking).
I'd rather fix these then get new printers. I've seen small formatters as low as $35, and they can be swapped in 5 minutes each. As long as we can get the debugged boards, it'll be worth the cost.
The 4000 is a good machine, but we usually use them as network printers for the smaller departments. The 2015 is perfect for cubicles and offices.
Thanks

DC,

If you're looking at formatters priced at $35, those are not new formatters or truly refurbished. Just used, working pulls (or perhaps non-working pulls) from used machines.

Keep in mind some people might call something refurbished but not really replace the components. Just pull it from a machine. They're equating "used" with "refurbished."

I'd make sure that you get a warranty from wherever you buy; and also, make sure they accurately match the board you request (pretty common for folks to mix up/misship network boards vs. non-network boards)
