While recently servicing laserjet for customer, was asked to look at deskjet unit. Complaint was that carriage would hang up. Could release if reboot printer. Noticed belt and encoder available as parts. Is this acommon problem with the deskjets? I have experience on an older Panasonic inkjet fax with this type carriage system.

We need some more information before we can give advice. What inkjet printer is it? How is it used?

Most common carriage hangup issue I run across is a dirty locator strip. This is the plastic strip with all the vertical lines on it. When it gets dirty the carriage does not know where it is and it hangs up. Clean it with an alcohol based cleaner or a water based detergent and a swab with a long wooden stick. Clean both sides of it along its full length. This usually solves this problem.

A second issue is tension on the locator strip. When clearing jams sometimes the spring that keeps the strip in tension gets deformed. Usually the spring can be formed back into position.
