I've got a LJ4100TDN that is giving a 49.1.128 error. I know that the 49 pertains to the formatter board, but I don't know what the .1.128 references. I can't find anything in service manual, so I'm guessing that slot #1 on the formatter board has a problem with the SIMM. Can anyone confirm this? If not, what the heck does it mean?

Thanks,
David

There is no reference to look up the exact error codes, and I actually think different causes can trigger the same error codes ...
but, anyway, to troubleshoot, first I would pull the JetDirect card, and reboot the machine without the JetDirect installed to see if you can clear the 49 error...
second, if you have another working 4100, swap the DIMM chips ...
third, swap formatters with a working 4100 if available...

More info....
Do you get the error on power up, after initialization, printing...

It's most likely a firmware error. Do you have Extra memory on the formatter?
1st we have to establish when the error occurs. Is it intermittant or solid?

Please write back.

Well, as it turns out it was the DIMM in slot #1. I pulled the DIMM from slot #1 out and the error message disappeared. I then swapped it with the DIMM in slot two and got a 49.2.xx error during the memory check at power up. Unless they complain, I'm going to leave the printer with 24 megs of RAM instead of the 40 that they had. The print server spools the jobs to that printer, so I don't think 'anyone will be any the wiser'.

Thanks for the suggestions!

How many DIMMs were originally plugged into the formatter?
You say that you removed the DIMM from slot 1.
Did you count from top to bottom or bottom to top?

The bottom slot (J1) is ROM only. I actually removed the 16 meg DIMM for J2(third slot from the top) and swapped it with the 16meg DIMM in J3 (second slot from the top).

Just wanted to make sure that you left the firmware chip alone.
you did good
