Could be a bad formatter.
Wait a minute. You say it refuses to answer incoming faxes. That implies that the printer can and is being used to fax. Is that true - it can send faxes but can't receive them?

It seems to send fax's OK but refuses to answer incoming faxes. Not sure if firmware is the issue but several Fax/modem cards do the same thing..Murphy

Could be formatter. Could also be a bad phone number. You don't have to know your own number to send out a fax! Try calling that number from your cell and listen to the printer to hear if it's receiving anything.
Call the phone company and ask the to test the number. Tell them what's going on. They can be a great help.

Could be a problem with the telephone cable, try another phone cable. or better still try another telephone socket, and ring up the telephone company to see if you have a faulty line.

Try to borrow another fax machine too see if that fax machine does the same thing.

People don't usually fax things anymore, but it was the wonder of the age in the 80s.

Reread the manual of the printer to learn how it receives incoming faxes, I have discovered over my years of being a IT support technician that more than once that it was nothing wrong with the computer / printer, it was the ignorance of the user.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions..I did put out another completely different Fax machine at this location and it seems to be doing just fine. Must be something with the MFP. I did check settings..number of rings to answer(2) and put the rest of the Fax RX settings to default and still no joy. Maybe next week when I get back I'll try a formatter PCB. The Fax machine that is in there now is using a different line cord than the MFP. I'll keep you posted if I discover the fix. Murphy

We work on a lot of FAX machines here. The modem has two interfaces: one to make a call and another to receive a call. A surge on the phone line system can wipe out either one or both. Usually this board is seperate from the main board and can be replaced. No way to get schematics so you cannot repair it yourself. Take the covers off and look for the board that connects to the RJ-11 phone connections. Get the number off the board and Google it or check with HP and see if they will sell you one.

i have found that in a very small amount of times, that the phone jack in the wall, and the cable , can be defective. the phone company can be called out to check for voltage spikes, or defective wires that can short out modems. i have 30 years in this industry, i have been a trainer for three manufactures and have seen this around twenty times. hope this helps. garybear

Thought I would bring everyone up to speed with this problem. Today we upgraded firmware on the 3035 with no joy. I met with another tech at this particular account and we both feel now that the problem lies with maybe the ring current on the line. Back when this problem started, we had "many" machines exhibiting double rings on the lines. After complaining to their particular telephone repair group, they were able to change it to single ring but still having widespread problem (now I find out that other tech is seeing this elsewhere) with HP MFP's not answering incoming calls. The loaner Fax machine that I put out at this account is working fine. No problems at all. It is basically a straight forward FAX machine and not a HP MFP. We are thinking that this particular account must have upgraded their phone system and didn't tell anybody & now we're having these problems show up. We put in a trouble ticket to their helpdesk today, so we'll see what shakes out. Murphy

Yesterday, we were working with the telecom people at this particular account and discovered that the machines that were being affected were in the same cabinet. So it appears that it is a telecom problem and not a machine problem. They are going to bring in the outfit who maintains their phone system and do some troubleshooting. Murphy:

:) Just to bring this thread to a conclusion. Today, I received a VoiceMail that the telecom people had replaced the ringer Box for this particular cabinet and now all is well. Not a Machine problem after all ! Took a lot of convincing to finally get their telecom people to investigate further but it paid off. Murphy

Just to stretch the conclusion a little more, let me reiterate what was mentioned before. The phone company, They can be your friend.

When I have a wierd fax problem I call the phone carrier for that site and tell them about the problem that I'm having. And could they please test the line. I've never had them turn me down. They run their tests and then they will tell me the line is very noisy, the line is down, the line is good, whatever. It points me in the right direction. If something is wrong with the line I have the customer call the phone company to have them come out and perform their magic.

It will save you time and parts. Time and parts is MONEY.
