I have an HP LJ 4050 that I have put your maintenance kit in 2 or 3 times. The right left hand side in the 1st 1-1 1/2 in getting lighter. We have shaken the cartridge to no avail. Thoughts.

If you are pretty sure it is not the toner cartridge and the transfer roller (black foam roller that mates with the image drum in the toner cartridge) looks good then I would pop the lid off the laser assy. and look for toner contamination on the correcting lens. Please let us know what you find!

Did you try a different toner cartridge?
Like bigal said, you might have a dirty lense or mirror in the scanner assembly.

First try new toner cartdridge (bear in mind, refilled can be faulty out-of-box), then look at transfer roller. Make sure both sides are clipped in (I have seen many where one side is broken). Then look at fuser and see if film is damaged or pressure roller. Then I would look at laser assembly as last resort.

Based on all of your comments, I waited for the person who had more cartridges to come back and asked her to put another new one in. This seems to have made the problem better so I am going to go with that now. Thank you! :)

I've seen failing High Voltage Power Supplies do this too.
