Hello all,

I am so glad I found this sight. I am new to printer servicing and have a couple questions that still remain after speaking to HP techs on the phone.

Unfortunately, I think there may be a possibility I made a huge mistake and my job may be somewhat in jeopardy, lets hope not. Anyhow, on to the question. Sorry if this info has been posted or already asked, I did a quick search and still feel I need more info.

HP service menus- what specifically does changing the 'MAINT COUNT' to all zeros accomplish?

Will doing this make it so the 'Perform Service' message does not appear soon?

What relation does this specific counter have to the perform service message, if anything at all?

My initial assumption was that by going into the service menu, and scrolling to 'MAINT COUNT' and setting all digits to 0, meant that it reset the maintenance counter so that it would take 20,000 or so pages for that message to come up again. So far out of 60 or so various models of HP monochrome laserjets, two have had the message pop up after I left customer site, not a good thing as I had just done "preventative maintenance".

Thanks for hearing me. Looking forward to gaining some knowledge from the knowledgeable and experienced folks here!

On some of the printers the maintenance is scheduled for 225,000.That ism the maintenance count.
When you reset the count to zero(0), the counter will count up to 225,000 before the maintenance message appears.
I believe if you go into the configuration menu you will find the "reset service message".

HP has made this confusing for us ... :-) The term "Maintenance Count" means different things on different models ...

On the 4050 & 4100 model printers (not the 4000), resetting the "Maintenance Count" to "0" is the correct method for clearing the "Perform Printer Maintenance" message ...

However, on other models (like the original LaserJet 4000 and the LaserJet 5000) if you set the "Maintenance Count" to 0, the "Perform Printer Maintenance" message will pop up all the time ...the menu says "Maintenance Count" (HP's poor choice of words!), but the menu is actually referring to the "Maintenance Interval" --> so on the 4000 & 5000 models, it's quite tricky : you would go into Service Mode, the first item you will see under the Service Menu is "PAGES=######", write that number down! then go to the Next item, which is "Maintenance Count" ... set "Maintenance Count" to equal (PAGES + 200,000) ...

Just so you know -- your customers will still be able to print and do all their normal functions even if that message constantly appears ... it's just an annoying reminder that the counter has reached its cycle.

CS Steve, somethings wrong there.
If pages = 500000(as an example) and maintenance count = maintenance interval (200000), you've just set the next PM for 700000 pages.

your formula pages + maintenance count = maintenance interval

Yep, it's super weird but that's how it works -- but again, this is only on the 4000 and 5000 models ...

It's HP's fault that it is this confusing because on some models when they refer to "maintenance count", they mean "maintenance count" ... and on other models, they really mean "maintenance interval"

the other models, there is a separate setting called "maintenance interval" that stays constant at 200,000 , and you reset the "maintenance count" to 0 ...

Hey Vanguy,

What model printer is causing you to lose your job?

HP Support document

HP LaserJet 4000, 5000, 8000, and 8100 Printer Families - Resetting the Page Count after Last Maintenance

ISSUE: After installing a maintenance kit on the printer and clearing the Display Maintenance Message section in the Configuration menu, the Pages Since Last Maintenance counter does not reset to zero.

SOLUTION: Reset the counter by turning the printer off and back on while holding down the ITEM – (ITEM MINUS) and VALUE – (VALUE MINUS) buttons simultaneously. The control panel will display the message, RESET MAINT COUNT .

NOTE: The message, PERFORM USER MAINTENANCE , must appear on the control panel and the page count must be past the service interval before it can be reset to zero.

This document provides information about the contents of an HP LaserJet 4000/4050 series printer maintenance kit and when to install the kit into the printer. Normally, the maintenance kit needs to be replaced when the control panel displays the PERFORM PRINTER MAINTENANCE message. To order the printer maintenance kit, see the information below.

NOTE: Click here for instructions on how to install the maintenance kit (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bpl06785) .

That's the shortcut method and will normally work in cases where the printer is currently saying "Perform Printer Maintenance"...

if you do need to reset the count on the 4000 or 5000, and the shortcut doesn't take, or if the "Perform Printer Maintenance" is not displayed, then you need to use the "long method" I was describing above...
