We have a bunch of 2420's that growl. We got the new gears and once the fuser is out they are easy to change. The question is what kind of grease to use when assembling the gears? It looks like a lithium grease used in automobiles. Should the shafts of the new gears be lubed?
Thanks,
Al

You can lube the gears and the shaft ... but the key on this noise problem really seems to be the poor quality of the fuser bushings HP uses ... HP and a lot of people blame the gears for the noise... but the reason the gears are so worn out and noisy, is because of the bushings that support the lower pressure roller bar ... on our fusers we are using what seems to be a better brand of fuser bushings and , combined with changing the fuser gear, the noise problem has been eliminated for us ...

Thanks Steve. We seem to have higher serial number printers and have had no problems with the fuser bushings. We pulled the gears out of one that was growling real bad and some blue grease got on the shafts. When we put it back together the noise was almost gone. Our printers sit on the shelf for months between deployments to disasters and do not get that much use. Seem to pick up the growling noise between 80K and 100K pages but others have 200K pages and no growl. We just got two sets of new gears to try and will use some of the grease on the gears to lube the shafts/bushings of the gears.
We want to try this first before getting into fuser bushings but that may well wind up where we will have to go. Always appreciate your wisdom.
