On the Vista machine double check the printer addresses (ip, and gateway).
Compare them to the XP machine.

thanks for the reply.

The vista machine has a different ip address from the xp machine. However, the default gateway is the same... since I have two separate machines on the same network and work group I assumed they would have to be separate ip address.

Thanks again

RedCow was asking about the printer's IP address, instead of each computer's IP address ...

But in this case the printer would actually not have an IP address ... it looks like you have this printer connected to an XP PC through a USB cable, and the XP PC is acting as the "printer server" ...

My first guess would be that when you click "File ... Print", the printer driver you select from the drop down list is not the correct one ... it may be similar, very close, or even identical, but may not be the correct one ... On the Vista machine, if you open the Control Panel--> Printers & Faxes, and look through your list of printers, be sure you are seeing the shared printer ... you may find two "Photosmart P1000" names in your list of printers, which would indicate one of those two is a "local" driver and the other one is the one that you shared ... So be sure that when you click "File...Print" and choose from your drop-down list of printers, you are choosing the same driver that is the "Shared Printer" on the XP machine, and not a local driver specific to that Vista machine ...

Also, on the Vista machine, can you tell us what happens in the Print Queue when you send a print job... if you watch your System Tray (the little icons that pop up in the bottom right corner of your screen) does the print job just eventually disappear, or do you actually get an error message ... ?

That is correct the printer is connected to an XP PC through a USB cable, and the XP PC is acting as the "printer server" .The printer driver is a hp design jet 660c that I selected locally on the xp computer because that is the closest match I could find that was compatabilile with windows vista, however this is not the correct one. On the Vista machine, the printer is hp design jet 660c, but not the "Photosmart P1000" driver since I cannot load this cd on the xp. the xp as well as the vista have the same driver loaded "hp design jet 660c. the xp is the local and the vista is connected to a wireless network on the xp printer. Also, on the Vista machine, the printer icon never pops up. However, if I add one locally to the vista the icon will pop up but never disappers, but I never receive an error message. I close this icon by cancelling all print jobs in the queque.

thanks for your help

This driver issue is definitely your problem ... just so you know up front, some printers are not Vista compatible ... Have you ever gotten the printer to print by hooking it directly to the Vista machine?

You might get this setup to work just by matching up the drivers on both machines ...

1. Don't use the driver you mentioned ... on the XP machine, go to HP.com, click on "Download software and drivers" and type in your product name "Photosmart 1000"... a list of operating systems will appear, choose the XP option and then download the driver onto your XP computer ... doubleclick and unzip the folder that downloads ...

2. Now go to your Control Panel--> Printers & Faxes, and click Add a Printer... in that Wizard you'll have the option to click "Have Disk" and then you can browse over to the folder you just unzipped ... inside that folder will be the driver file... finish the wizard and then that driver will pop up into your Printers & Faxes folder ... Next open up the "Properties" of that printer, and turn "Printer sharing" on...

2. Next go to your Vista computer ... Click the Start button , and then, in the Search box, type \\ followed by the name of the XP computer (for example, \\Johnslaptop). After you press Enter, the Vista computer will pop up a folder that shows the contents of the XP computer.

3. Double-click on "Printers". In the list, you should see the driver you just downloaded and installed and shared. If you don't see the printer in the list, go back to the XP computer and make sure the printer is connected, turned on, and shared with other users on the network.

4. Once you've found the printer in the network, Double-click that printer. Windows will automatically begin trying to add the printer to your Vista Control Panel. It will try to install the printer driver... if Vista probably won't find the driver by itself, so if it asks you for the driver just browse to your XP computer and find the file in same folder you unzipped earlier ...

5. The wizard should install the driver onto the Vista machine and then the driver will appear in your Printers folder on the Vista machine. Try a test print, if this doesn't work you may be stuck with a printer that is not Vista compatible ...

Steve is correct. There are no p1000 Vista drivers.
