Tray 2 is not lifting..Probable cause I suspect is lifter motor. I don't have a manual for this particular model and from what I can see, the motor is buried behind a circuit board on the right hand side. After turning the printer on & off several times it finally came up with a 59.9 error code. Is this a lifter motor error ? What is the part no. for the motor and where is it located ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Murphy

59.9 is the ETB motor.
Check the event log to see whats happening.
Also hit the "?" when you get the error, and see if any info gets displayed

OK, Redcow, what is the ETB Motor ? Is that the lifter motor ? Murphy

ETB motor is the motor that drives the Transfer Belt assembly (ETB=Electrostatic Transfer Belt) ... you might also try just reseating that transfer belt assembly ...

Thanks for all the replies. I will try reseating the transfer belt assy. and see if that takes care of the 59.9 error code. Now back to my first question, tray 2 is not lifting, would the lifting motor be at fault ? and where is it located in this model. It appears to me by looking at the gear box on the right hand side that its up inside the machine somewhere. Possibly behind that "big" circuit board. If so, do I just have to take that board off to gain access ? Thanks again...Murphy

Well, the 59.9 error might be the reason it's not lifting ... if there's a problem with the Transfer Belt assembly not turning, the paper probably won't pickup ... can u run pages from the manual feed ?

 I tried to feed paper from the manual tray but it didn't work. Didn't even try to pull the paper at all. If I get a chance, I'll work on the transfer belt and see if getting that to work will fix the lifting problem. Thanks. Murphy

Uh,,Murf, it's the ETB that is bad. Check the contacts in the "foot" that it connects to on the right.

Is the printer making any unusual sounds? A kind of poping sound (like plastic gears slipping past one another) for a few seconds after you put the tray in.

Just thought I would let everyone know what the solution was with that LJ5550. Today, I replaced the paper feed assy which includes the lifter motor and gears. That took care of my lifting problem..to gain better access to the Paper Feed Assy. it was necessary to remove the Transfer Belt and two of the toner cartridges. After removing the ETB & then re-installing it after changing the paper feed assy., the error code disappeared and the printer worked ! Thanks for everyone's input regarding this problem and hopefully it might help someone with this problem in the future. Murphy
