Hi,

We seem to be having a small problem with our Xerox printer drivers... they are set to auto select tray, paper type and paper size in the driver settings.

Trays 2 & 3 have A4 Plain paper, Trays 4 & 5 have A3 Heavy paper with Tray 1 empty and shut - we don't want to use this tray. Whenever we print anything no matter what size or from which application the printer tries to print from Tray 1 and hence an error message is displayed asking to insert correct paper to tray 1.

Is there a way to tell the printer to ignore this tray or even disable it?

Any help greatly appreciated

James

Disabling Tray 1 probably won't help in this case -- if you have the driver set to "AutoSelect" it should AutoSelect... somehow the driver is not recognizing your paper types/sizes correctly ...

First, I would make sure you have Xerox drivers (downloaded from Xerox web site) specifically for that exact model and exact operating system...

Second I would make sure the drivers are notified exactly which paper type & size is in each tray .. make sure the driver's settings are so specific that it clearly registers that "Tray 3 Paper Type=Plain", "Tray 3 Paper Size=A4" etc...

Or if you've already checked and the paper settings are exact matches: there is one potential problem, this Plain paper type versus the Heavy paper type ... I would try changing them all to Plain ... your software might send all jobs as "Plain" paper, so your driver refuses to choose the tray that is set to "Heavy" and instead tries to send to the multipurpose tray...

Third, in your software application, you need to make sure that the print jobs you are sending match up exactly... for example in Word, you need to go into "Page Setup" and make sure that you notify that specific application that that specific document's "Page Setup" is A4 paper size...

Fourth, not sure if Xerox's driver allow you to do this, but in HP's drivers you can disable Tray 1... it's generally under the Advanced tab, and there will be a list of "Installed paper trays" and you actually have the option to click on "Tray 1=Installed" and change that to read "Tray 1=Unavailable"... in other words, you can "trick out" the printer and make it believe there is no Tray 1 installed...

Did you try to disable tray 1 in the printer itself using the "configuration" menu on the operator panel.
Print out the configuration pages and check tray 1 and the rest of the trays.
If the printer has tray 1 as the default tray, then it's going to be the default tray.
