Problem with a LJ4700 Fuser Message...

I've been watching as the old fuser wound down to 0% on one of our LJ 4700DTN printers. Finally today the message on the printer screen says to change the fuser; which I did. The message won't go away and the status page is still showing 0%. It's not likely but possible that the replacement fuser from HP was bad so I tried another brand new one, and still no luck. As per the instructions: raise the lid, remove the old fuser, install the new fuser, close the lid. No power down or resetting the printer called for? As I recall, there is now manual way to reset the fuser? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On most of the most recent LaserJet models, you do have to inform the printer you have installed a new maintenance kit /fuser by:

-- hold down the checkmark button as you power on the printer
-- continue holding until all the LEDs illuminate and the screen appears to "freeze"
-- then release the Checkmark button, and press the Down arrow button to begin scrolling through a list of options ...
-- one of the options on this list should be "New Maintenance Kit Installed" or "New Fuser Installed" ... press the Checkmark button when you come to that option...
-- the printer will finish cycling and the warning message should disappear

There is no option anywhere on the LJ4700 menu to reset the page count. I went into the service menu (09470005) there is no option in there either. I have discovered that the fusers have circuitry built into them that that will reset the page count one time only when installed. Below is an excerpt from an HP support site!

CLJ 4700 Series Fusers— important notes:
• The original fuser that comes inside the 4700 series printer has a part number of RM1-1719 for 110V, and RM1-1734 for the 220V version. The original fuser has no page count reset circuitry, since the fuser and printer are already starting at zero.

• The HP LaserJet 4700 family of printers has no fuser page count reset mechanism accessible via control panel or computer screen, but, instead, relies upon the reset circuitry that is built into the replacement fusers for this series, to reset the page count automatically.

• The replacement 110V fuser is RM1-3131, and the replacement 220V fuser is RM1-3146. (These are the fusers that come in the Q7502A and the Q7503A kits.)

These replacement fusers contain the special circuitry that causes the Color LaserJet 4700 printer to automatically reset the fuser use page counter upon the first power-on cycle after the replacement fuser has been installed, so that you can keep track of number of pages printed by the newly installed fuser. This special event will only happen once, when the printer is powered up for the very first time

So, if a customer decides to take a good fuser from one CLJ 4700, 4730, or CP4005 printer and installs it in another of these printers, the fuser page counter will not be reset. Only brand new, or properly remanufactured fusers, with the part numbers of RM1-3131 (110V) or RM1-3146 (220V), will reset the page counters, and they will only do that the one time. Most remanufactured fusers of this type cannot reset the count.

DavidM - I just went through the service manual and I too could find nothing in any menu that allows you to reset any count of any thing in the printer.
I don't know how CS Steve figured it out, but if you can do it please post instructions

No, he is correct, just had this issue come up recently -- on this model there is no manual reset from the Menu system ... HP has put new technology into this particular fuser -- the fuser has a "fuseable link" that is opened upon install of the fuser... basically if you're installing a remanufactured fuser, if the fuser rebuilder did not replace this fuseable link, there will not be a way to reset this error message ... of course, you should still be able to print, you'll just see the annoying reminder ...

Why do I get the impression that the engineers have too much time on their hands?
After 200,000 pages a fuser goes bad. I replace the fuser which resets the page count. The feed rollers haven't been changed. After another 200K pages the rollers and ETB actually have 400K.

Is this over engineered or what?
