Just received our 4050N from you folks. We were hoping that the firmware would have been updated. Is there anything you can provide us to assist with this?

Thanks

Hi:
To update the firmware you need JetAdmin software. It is free from HP but the current version, 10, needs a processor with a gig of memory to run well. You might need a little help setting it up. The next problem is that if the power fails during the update you now have a parts machine or a boat anchor. It takes a 1,500 watt UPS unit to carry a printer like yours.

You can also check out the purpose of the updates on the HP site and see if there are any benefits from doing the updates.

Another attitude is that if it is not broken then don't fix it!

Updates to the NIC, either embedded in the formatter or plugged in, are not so hazardous. If these updates do not go well there is no harm done and a second try usually fixes it.

Firmware on the laserjet 4050 is not flashable. The jetdirect card, if you have one installed, is flashable but we generally don't recommend it. You have to use webjetadmin which is a cpu and memory hog, or HP download manager which seems to work a little better. Is there something that is prompting you to want a different version of the firmware? The J3113A jetdirect card, the card that originally shipped with the LJ 4050N, has proven to be the most reliable jetdirect card available for that printer. I've never seen or heard of anyone needing to upgrade the firmware in that card.

You will see more differences and performance changes by using different drivers on your computer. PCL5E or postscript are what we recommned.
