the thing prints fine but when i try and scan it starts "intializing scanner" and freezes there. i talked to an hp tech and they said it was the formatter board so i replaced that and the problem was still there. so i called again and an hp tech said it had to be the scanner control board, so i replaced that and the problem is still there. when i go into the troubleshooting icon on the front panel it does a scanner test and everthing seems to work. if anyone can help i would appreciate it a lot.

You may want to print out a Error Log and see if there are any errors pointing to the scanner itself. It may help you determine what's going on.

If there's no luck there, I'd probably flash the firmware of the printer, which takes a considerable amount of time. The firmware of the printer is stored on the hard drive and when you turn the unit on, it loads the firmware into various sections of the printer. What might be happening is that the firmware is corrupt and isn't loading the proper coding for the scanner unit. It's a long shot...admittedly.

There always seems to be an issue with these MFP's.
Re-seat the logic for the scanner, and wiggle the cable aroung a bit.
It is just a connectivity thing.
