I have an HP 4250 that is making a ringing type of a noise ONLY when attempting to print from Tray-1 (manual feed) Tray-2 works fine - I have replaced the Tray-1 paper pickup assembly and still get the noise - any thoughts?
:(

First things first, I would try a different toner cartridge...#1 cause of any "ringing" noise...
(I hear what you're saying about only from Tray 1, would still try toner first)

Other noisy items on this printer include: worn fuser , swing plate gear which drives the fuser...
see http://www.printertechs.com/tech/assemblies/swingplate/swingplate1.php

I'm sure all of our definitions of "ringing" are probably different...any more description of the noise?

Steve:
I have also changed out the pick-up drive assembly - still get the ringing noise
Like I say we can print all day from Tray-2 with out any noise which I believe would rule out the toner and fuser - even eliminated the duplexer and got the noise from a Tray-1 test page - there has to be something else turning when printing from Tray-1 (ringing type of a squeak)

The reason Steve said the toner could be the cause is that the drum in the toner is a hollow aluminum tube that sometimes resonates. Since tray 1 prints at half speed you might not get that resonance from tray 2. I'm primarily talking about reman cartridges.

If you don't have another toner try this: put 1 or 2 pages in tray 1, then print a 5 page document. When tray 1 empties, the printer should draw from tray 2 and it usually takes a few pages for the printer to switch to full speed.

Thanks for the input - all that I had to work with was 3rd party toner - So as the last resort - I purchased an HP Toner cartridge and sure enough it was the culprit - was not aware that manual feed runs slower speed - Thanks again
